Washington, DC - House Veterans' Affairs Committee Chairman Bob Filner (D-CA) released the following statement following a Congressional hearing to examine an incident involving reusable dental equipment and veteran patient safety at the John Cochran VA Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri:

"I would like to thank the veterans who bravely told their stories of receiving a certified letter in the mail from the Department of Veterans Affairs notifying them of possible exposure to deadly diseases following routine dental procedures at a VA medical facility. After 1,812 veterans received this letter, they were directed to a hotline to answer their personal questions and orchestrate their follow-up care. To learn that VA employees that answered that hotline were not prepared with facts – much less the necessary compassion to attend to these veterans – is shameful.

"I remain concerned with VA's lack of transparency. When mistakes are made, honesty and truthfulness are the only way to begin to rebuild trust with the public. Success is measured by veteran service, not bureaucratic preservation.

Filner chooses to blame Secretary Shinseki, yet the man is doing the best he can handling one hell of a lot more than Filner could dream of.

Too many VAMC directors need to be replaced, yet it's only when the bad news comes about publicly that people like Filner want to beat on his chest and make his presence known, and only because he's up for re-election.

Filner himself should be ashamed of promising to take care of veterans then presenting a watered down HR-2254!

Hopefully come November he will be gone like many others!

Filmer like Akaka have no idea w hat happens to veterans outside of every legislation they purpose. Akaka a WWll vet
Is over 80 years old does he really understand what is happening to veterans today. I am in agreement that we need to kick
The bums out of the hill. We need people in the committee of VA that are veterans who do more than just wave a flag
    To get re elected.
