It should now be easier for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder to receive benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The VA announced last Monday that veterans need only show they served in a war and were exposed to events that could cause the disorder, a wordy way of saying that a soldier or Marine who endured an explosion, witnessed a unit under fire, or was raped qualifies. Until now the VA required veterans to document each and every event that might have triggered the disorder. Otherwise, the VA denied or stonewalled veterans' claims.
More than 400,000 receive compensation benefits have been linked to PTSD. Disability compensation is a tax-free benefit the VA pays to veterans for disabilities that come from, or are exacerbated by, injuries or diseases associated with active service.
