The Provincial Archives of New Brunswick said it faced a bigger-than-expected workload after the federal government extended its deadline for people trying to qualify for compensation for Agent Orange exposure at a military base in the late 1960s.

In September 2007, the federal government said a one-time, lump sum payment of $20,000 would be paid to each person who was exposed to the chemical defoliant at CFB Gagetown. About 4,500 people would be eligible for the compensation, it was estimated.

The U.S. military tested Agent Orange, Agent Purple and several other powerful chemical defoliants on a small section of the base over seven days in 1966 and 1967.

Maybe NPRC should have worked harder at converting all records to electronic format years ago when the technology became available. And what's their excuse now that they've not done so by now and made all records electronic for all active duty as well?

Wait till the final rule for Ischemic heart disease, B-Cell Leukemia and Parkinson's is published, there will be thousands more filing claims and the burden on NPRC to provide record copies will be a heck of a lot more!
