The Provincial Archives of New Brunswick said it faced a bigger-than-expected workload after the federal government extended its deadline for people trying to qualify for compensation for Agent Orange exposure at a military base in the late 1960s.
In September 2007, the federal government said a one-time, lump sum payment of $20,000 would be paid to each person who was exposed to the chemical defoliant at CFB Gagetown. About 4,500 people would be eligible for the compensation, it was estimated.
The U.S. military tested Agent Orange, Agent Purple and several other powerful chemical defoliants on a small section of the base over seven days in 1966 and 1967.
