The first trial of a lawsuit has begun in Miami among hundreds of cases filed by veterans claiming serious infections were caused by shoddy hygiene practices at Veterans Administration hospitals.

Air Force veteran Robert Metzler and his wife are seeking $30 million in damages in the case that began Monday. They claim a colonoscopy Metzler underwent at the Miami VA hospital in 2007 infected him with hepatitis C because the equipment was unclean.
