U.S. military personnel and veterans are plagued by substance abuse, depression and suicide, three new studies indicate.

In one study, researchers surveyed nearly 600 veterans returning from war zone deployment in Iraq or Afghanistan, and found that they were at increased risk for mental health problems and alcohol and drug abuse.

Nearly 14 percent of the veterans screened positive for probable post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), 39 percent for probable alcohol abuse, and 3 percent for probable drug use. Men reported more alcohol and drug use than women, but there were no gender differences in PTSD or other mental health conditions.

Veterans returning from Iraq reported more depression or functioning problems and more alcohol and drug use than those returning from Afghanistan. Army and Marine veterans reported worse mental and physical health than Air Force or Navy veterans.

The studies were published online Jan. 25 in the American Journal of Public Health and are scheduled to appear in the March supplement print issue of the journal.

In the second study, researchers found that major depression and substance use disorders have increased among active duty combat-exposed veterans. The finding comes from an analysis of data from 678,382 active personnel serving between 2001 and 2006.

Amazing we’re still doing research and studies on military service and it’s direct relation to PTSD.

IF the VA were doing their jobs properly, we’d not see near as many Veterans going to drugs and alcohol or committing suicide and/or ending up living on the streets as we are today.

It’s simple approve all claims and worry about the details later on, but get these men and women the proper medical care they need NOW, not 3-4 years from now.

Live and let live please

It is a sad thing to see this sort of thing. War is terrible, for both the winners and the losers (not that anyone really wins in war). It's thing like this that make me a pacifist. Not just seeing the horrible things that are done in the name of one's beliefs or patriotism, but seeing what becomes of those who return from war. Great seed Jim.

I honestly believe and I am sure someone sooner or later will point out how I'm wrong, but had the White House, DoD, DHS, and the POTUS listened to all the warnings about 9/11 and acted on them vs. wait and see... I honestly don't think we'd have ended up in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Nor would we have lost thousands of lifes and many thousands of others who did come home would not be suffering both mental and physical wounds and treated worse than second class citizens.

It also doesn't help that they are hell bent on cutting the benefits for these Veterans. They expect the military and VA to do more with less while they pad their pockets.

I know where I'm sending my medical bills.

Just more reasons why WE the People MUST CLEAN HOUSE including the POTUS.

And even more reason why NOT to trust any of the Big Six and for Veterans to demand refunds of annual and lifetime dues and join forces with Veteran Organizations who really do fight for what is right!
